Take flight

You were born with wings. Why prefer to crawl through life? ~Rumi

Human lives were always dependent on each other and with every other species. We were interconnected in ways which were symbiotic and supporting each other. Especially with other beings, we evolved together. We were the species which brought meaning and purpose to a lot of life and able to articulate the aspirations and dependencies better. We were the only species which knew the truth and the absolute creation as a whole. We discovered new lands, invented things to make our lives better, and we were ever curious. Our curiosity has led to everything we use in our modern lives. We are perhaps one of the very few species which was able to take a broader perspective on life and evolution. Something is happening to us in the evolutionary journey as we grow our dependence on very fewer species, and our curiosity gets limited to information creation and access. We have become too dependant on financial based sustenance and success based on wealth creation; we are missing our capabilities which are within. We are getting used to our limitations rather than questioning them. What we are truly capable is what we have to rediscover from within ourselves.

Only when we know that we carry wings, can we spread them

Only when we spread the wings, can we fly!

Human potential is truly unlimited. The depth of human thought or strength of human will, the courage of the heart or the power of survival, the fight of the ailing body or the grit of the connected mind, the vastness of intelligence or the potential of human determination, the finesse of the healing touch or the beauty of compassion – everything is an incomparable gift in collective to our human evolution. Yet, we have or beginning to forget our true nature and become addicts to convenience. We know our strength through human evolution, but we have to be careful of not losing it. We have fought through generations to become what we are; we cannot crawl in our existence now. To look beyond the maze of mental barriers and physical limits, we have to move up to a terrace. To look beyond our weak ties of communities and small nuances of everyday life we have to look through a window of an airplane. To look beyond geographical boundaries and embrace the oneness of the planet we have to be in space. To look beyond what we can and to embrace our true nature we just have to close our eyes and look within. Only by rediscovering our true nature can know our wings and unfold them. Only when we soar we can see the bigger picture. When we do, the world becomes one and gets smaller, and we begin to become insignificant.

Wordly Voices

“Raise your words, not your voice, it is rain that grows flowers and not thunder” ~ Rumi

Each of us has a big need to be heard. We want to speak more than we listen to others. Most of the time, we end up repeating ourselves more than once every few minutes all in a need to be heard and valued. Have you ever recorded yourself speaking even to your family and heard it back? It would be a fascinating journey into your own self. We all will be surprised how much we repeat and how much we say similar things throughout the day. We tend to use few words, repeat them and if people do not value that, we raise the voice. By raising the voice, we believe that we have the right to be heard. Why do we feel that we have to be heard more than we hear others? We have to look around to see how much our words add to the noise around the world. Loudness causes disruption and not necessarily in a positive way. Any deafening sound can only cause damage and never build anything. We generally tend to believe that if we are loud enough, we will be heard. Loudness makes people look at us for an instant, in that minute, we think we have succeeded – but little do we realize, the loudness draws attention but weakens the openness of the listener. When we hear something loud, the first reaction is that of a frustration, irritation when we turn to look around. In that reaction, it is hard to listen to something good.

The more words you speak which are gentle, kinder and compassionate – the more the listener opens up

Have you realized, that when our minds are calmer and balanced, we are heard much better? It is because we can speak our hearts and not our mind. When mind takes over our speech, words are repetitive and loud. When our heart takes over our speech we are calm, centered and compassionate. Even better is when our soul takes over our speech – we will open our ears more than our mouths. The first step is to remove our minds from our speech. When you are passionate about something, people always comment – you spoke your heart. It is very genuine, very soothing and energizes the listener. The minute our voices go up – we start to drain the listener. It is an amazing correlation – if we are speaking from the heart, we give more energy to everyone around us and if we are speaking from our mind, as we are spending more energy we take energy from everyone around us. We need to shower gratitude to the listener. Gratitude brings trust, trust makes anyone open up. The minute you have opened up someone, everything you say reaches the heart of the listener. Do you want to reach just the mind of the listener or go to the heart? It is simple, if we speak from our heart we will reach the heart and if we speak from our minds, we will only reach the minds of listeners which will disappear soon. Spend more time speaking from the heart and you will be the rain which will make everyone around you bloom.

Opening Up

Who gets up early to discover the moment light begins? ~ Rumi

There are many things in life we take for granted. Lets begin with something which most of us have – relationships. When we have someone around us, doing something for us – we feel very thankful that it is happening to us may be just for the first few days. After that, once that it becomes a routine, we just take it as normal and even many times take it for granted. This moves as true it is with individuals to other things which are around us. Nature – is the singlemost resource we take for granted. How many times have we thought about where the water comes when we turn our taps in the morning or how thankful are for the bees which we always feel as a disturbance? We even tend to forget the relationships that nature has nurtured for us. As they are available most of the time, we have gotten so used to it. When the nature shows its dissent in some ways, then we tend to realize how small we are compared to this whole manifestation. When everything works well, especially like clockwork we can only assume that it is not going to end nor even comprehend that we will be without it. So, when the inevitable happens what happens in our thought process? The first thing is that we complain – How is it even possible? Why does this person do this to me? I am at suffering and that cause or person is responsible. This is ironical, as in the first place – what you received was only a favor. You felt that favor only for a few moments and forgot that favor part and thought it was part of your goodwill to get it. That is the biggest mistake we all make.

To appreciate every minute, forget the past and live the moment completely, fully.

To become alive, to open up constantly and appreciate what you have – we must not carry the past with us. Only because of the past we assume, take for granted what we already have. If you had to start every minute of yours afresh – everything seems to be a blessing once again. You completely appreciate everything you have, totally in gratitude and life becomes so fulfilling. To open up, simply means to empty. Unless we are empty and willing to receive, there is no point of opening up. We need to be reminded that everything around us happens for a reason and because we have everything around us, we need to be full of gratitude. There are so many beings which do not have the blessing and life that we have. We are fortunate, we have been taken care and we are already abundant. The point is to realize that the past cannot give us anything new, the future cannot promise either – so being in the moment to appreciate fully is our only hope. How do we practice to empty ourselves everyday? We need to give up our beliefs, our prejudices, our assumptions, our hatred, our jealousies, our conditions and our thinking – that is how you empty. The minute you are free from these, you are ready to receive and at the same time look at what we already we have to appreciate every minute of it. It is a very special feeling, it does not give you any tiredness it only opens you up, making you blossom everyday, like a fresh new flower appreciating the moment light begins and being full of gratitude for it.

(If you are interested, this is part of a longer poem by Rumi….which is from “The Essential Rumi” which is below, obviously english translation loses the original charm, but we have only this choice 🙂

Who gets up early
to discover the moment light begins?
Who finds us here circling, bewildered, like atoms?
Who comes to a spring thirsty
and sees the moon reflected in it?
Who, like Jacob blind with grief and age,
smells the shirt of his lost son
and can see again?
Who lets a bucket down and brings up
a flowing prophet?
Or like Moses goes for fire
and finds what burns inside the sunrise?

Jesus slips into a house to escape enemies,
and opens a door to the other world.
Soloman cuts open a fish, and there’s a gold ring.
Omar storms in to kill the prophet
and leaves with blessings.
Chase a deer and end up everywhere!
An oyster opens his mouth to swallow on drop.
Now there’s a pearl.
A vagrant wanders empty ruins.
Suddenly he’s wealthy.

But don’t be satisfied with stories, how things
have gone with others. Unfold
your own myth, without complicated explanation,
so everyone will understand the passage,
We have opened you.

Start walking toward Shams. Your legs will get heavy
and tired. Then comes a moment
of feeling the wings you’ve grown,
lifting.

Love’s child

DSC_0136

“I am a child of love.” ~ Rumi

When you are in love, many things do not matter. Everyone around us thinks us to be insane, but we continue to bask in love. We enjoy that very moment and we are oblivious to everything else. The true nature of love is to let go of everything. Any fault does not matter for love. You do not expect anything except that you be in that love. Nothing else matters. Remember the time you were in absolute love, you did not want to eat, sleep, talk, move or do anything. You just enjoyed being in that moment, in that love completely. That love is precious, rare and unique to yourself. It is also true that what you feel at peace with the moment, might not be for someone else. Every individual has that moment of love, that moment which they do not want to give away. Love increases multifold if you are able to have a conversation in silence with the beloved. It is not words that grow love, it is the lack of it. If you are able to quietly communicate, your thoughts and feelings expand multifold. It is such a wonderful feeling to be in love and be loved, and understand and be understood and be romantic and be romanced – all without uttering a word, without an action. A mere glance of an eye, the presence of the beloved or just a simple thought of the other – gives you so much peace and love.

We all are made of just pure love, all we need to do is to unlock the heart.

When you are a child of love, you just live now. You are devoid of expectations and just want to enjoy the moment. More than anything, you are a child. A child has no pre-conceived notions, nor expectations of tomorrow. The child just resonates with the present and enjoys the moments around it. He or She smiles to the environment and does nothing but to emanate love. The child just melts away your thoughts and brings you to realize the precious moments of love. Being with that child just makes you calmer. When you start being in love and emanate love unconditionally to everyone around you, you become that child, you make the place more peaceful and calmer. You do not distinguish from one to another. The love in your heart for your beloved, emanates to everyone around you. You give and receive love. The more unconditional it is, the better the environment becomes. You just become the centerpiece of attention in any place you are. People naturally come towards you, no one can reject true love, everyone needs a bit of pure love, everyone gravitates towards love.

Be a child, a love’s child. That innocence of not differentiating anyone to receive your pure love, that love which does not have any expectations of the future nor the memories of the past, that love which is unconditional, that love which makes everyone bask in your positive thoughts, that love which has nothing to offer except peace and that love which never ends. All you have to do is to open up!

Self suspicion

IMG_0689

“I should be suspicious of what I want.” ~ Rumi

Our wants are becoming vast. The more we have, the more we want. We are tending to forget our needs – but rather go on and dream more and more – all resulting in more wants. The unfortunate thing of our lives is that whatever we want is all from this world. First are material wants – which grows from one to another. Anything material leads only to another. There is no time when we get something which we desperately wanted and that is the end of that want. It is definitely going to lead you to something else. The world also operates in such a way now. Most of the things which we want, satisfy us only temporarily. Those things are also designed in such a way, that they should not give you a permanent satisfaction. They tend to gratify you instantly, but keep you longing for more. This cycle is what this world thrives upon. Second, we want relationships. Some relationships satisfy us for a much longer period, but as we are losing patience – even that period is shrinking. We can only satisfy our want for relationships till a time we can bear with it. As the wants are changing all the time, so does our need for relationships. The more we associate our relationships to our core needs, the less we will hanker for new ones. The last is the wants for your soul. This is what we spend the most insignificant time on. It also happens that the more you satisfy your own soul, the lesser and lesser wants you will see in yourself.

Awareness makes material immaterial and relationships satisfied.

Where does your wants arise from? Typically material wants arise from your mind, relationship wants from your heart and the awareness wants from your soul. We are normally consumed by the mind then by the heart and last by the soul. The minute we are able to associate our wants to these origins, you will start to prioritize. The more deeper we go and start catering to our awareness needs of our soul – the rest of the wants become immaterial. We start to see that our awareness makes you totally at peace and at deepest satisfaction. We have to become suspicious of ourselves. Start questioning – “Why am I like this?”, “Where is this want coming from?”, “Is it really necessary?”. Even if we momentarily give in and get to that want to satisfy our senses or heart, we will not be attached to it. Whether that want is satisfied or not – it would not make any difference to you. The want needs to get suppressed but you are not affected by it. The minute you go to the origins of the want, you will see they start to disappear. They start to become immaterial. You will still have those material and relationships around you – but without any sense of attachment. They will just happen but your soul is at peace. You are enjoying no matter what the want is, because the result is not affecting you.

Go ahead, feel the need for awareness in you. If you get to the awareness, all wants disappear and make you satisfied. Be at bliss, the only way is to get yourself detached. That detachment is going to deliver you of all wants.

Dreamy world

DSCN0425

“Open your eyes, for this world is only a dream.” ~ Rumi

When do you dream? Do you like being in a dream?. Sleep is a beautiful part of life, as it kind of erases every thought for that moment of sleep. When we can sleep peacefully, almost instantly, wherever you can – is considered a blessing. Why is that as children we can sleep so peacefully and as we grow older, we tend to sleep less and less? It is simply because nothing matters so much when we are fresh in this world. We are able to let go easily. We move on. The more older we get, the more we want to hold on to. The reason we want to hold on to – is because we do not want to lose our hold, our ego and our place in this world. We are scared somehow of the limited time we have on this planet, the more when we grow older – so that we want to use every moment to establish what we want. It is also fear that drives us to stay awake as much as we can. We are fearful of leaving this world, dying. We want our dream to stay on, we want to enjoy the view.

You dream vividly with closed eyes, only when we open we see the reality.

What we are supposed to do be is exactly opposite of what we already know and what we thought is reality. When we want to dream we are sleeping, we think opening the eyes to this world is reality. If we realize and turn it around – when you open and see this world, we need to realize it is a dream in itself. We are all living in this real dream. The dream of life. What we need to do is really open our eyes. We have to open our true eyes within ourselves, that is what will show us what is the real world. The real true you, rather than this amazing dream. The dream which we have started to own and associate as real. How much we have thought it as real, that we fight for survival, hang on to things which were all made in this dream like money, relationships and faiths. All of this are bound by only rules of this dream. The minute you wake up, this will seem only like a distant memory. Let us realize that this entire life is going to flash in front of us sometime and it will pass like how a dream really passes through us. That makes our life now much simpler. There is no reason to fight over anything – or argue over anything – or repent over anything – it is all a dream. This will also pass.

Open your eyes to yourself. All this drama of your act in this dream will seem silly. Laugh over it, enjoy these moments in this dream – take only things which matter as memories. None of it that was created in this dream will matter soon. They will all vanish very quickly when you wake up in the morning, that morning when you leave this body and see your life fully – that is the morning which will matter. nothing else really truly matters.

Conscious surrender

DSCN1177

“Try something different. Surrender.”~ Rumi

Today, our lives have gotten into a routine. Looking at ourselves, we are emulating the machines around us pretty much. We have fallen into a fixed routine, cyclic and sometimes mind-numbing. Things which really do not fall into that routine is specially reserved only for “vacations”. Since the time we wake up, getting to work either at home or office, managing our kids, doing groceries, going out and meeting friends, errands or even be it going to temples – unfortunately we have made it a routine. Even while we fold our hands in prayer – we are doing it as a practice and most of the times without being in that prayer. This is how our environment, the things we use have manifested in us. It is totally true that we become what surrounds us. We are surrounded by mechanical things most of our time and we tend to become machines as well. It is amazing that we do not realise it, even when we realise it partly – we can only complain. It is hardly a moment we think of getting out of it. Because getting out of it for us, is still very very physical. We want to run away from what we are doing, get out of our present duties and be in a carefree place. That for us is freedom and we hanker for that.

Surrender to who you are and not what you want to be.

The actual fact is that, you can still do everything you have to do being in society – but with a difference. The difference is not physical but internal. The difference is acceptance and not dissidence. The minute you accept who you are, accept your surroundings and realise you can still do what you really want to, it changes not just you – but everything around you, the way you see it. The minute you see everything different, eventually it changes too. The more you fight the environment, the more deeper it gets as you get bogged down. We have to rise above it. The way to rise is to surrender. Surrender is not a negative, it is an act of giving up – but doing it consciously. It is about acceptance. Accepting what comes our way. Acceptance leads to satisfaction, satisfaction leads to lesser expectation and that in turn leads to gratitude and hence the giving up of your resistance to life naturally. It is wonderful what surrender can lead us to. When we surrender internally to our soul, and listen to only what our soul tells us – the mind and heart disappear. It does take time, but when the mind and heart disappear into our soul what is left is the pure you. Surrender to your true nature, surrender to who you are and not what you want to be. You can do this, by still doing what you do, only that it makes life truly beautiful. This life, make it as beautiful as you can, be different, surrender to yourself.

Grieve happily

DSCN0475

“Don’t grieve. Anything you lose comes round in another form.” ~Rumi

What makes us sad? when we lose something we hold dear to our heart. When something leaves us which is important to us, we tend to feel bad. We really want to hold on to it. We always feel “it is ours”. We possess a lot of things, many things unwanted and many things we hold dear to. It is amazing the number of material possessions we hold on to. We gather so many things hoping that one day we will use it. We are very prepared for the rainy day, or even if it is for one day in a year – we want to hold on to that thing which we will use just once. How have we become so attached to it? Imagine a day when we do not have it, we feel sad -we want it. We may not grieve for something so material as much – but we do grieve for people, pets and living things around us. The more we are attached to someone, the minute we do not have them with us, we grieve the most. It brings us so much sadness and pain that we are not able to do anything else. We are so attached to things and people around us that we have enough to grieve every day.

Next is about qualities which we hold. Unfortunately we do not save so much good qualities in us consciously that we have enough for the rainy day. We are so busy gathering physical things and relationships, that we have very little time to gather good qualities. How many times have we consciously gathered goodness, compassion, empathy, love and kindness? Do we have enough to grieve when we lose them?

Lose yourself, lose your identity – it comes back as a greatest gift of self realisation.

Have you realised that something we might lose today, eventually comes back to us in some form? Many times we tend to lose material possessions and it comes back as great qualities for us. We do not see it as we do not see and welcome good qualities which are coming to us. Whatever goes away from you, comes back as qualities which will stop you from grief. If you lost some money and in turn nature sends you abundance kindness – you will be beyond grief as you are so kind to yourself too. Try losing ego, and it comes back as a wonderful gift of happiness and joy. Lose yourself, lose your identity – it comes back as a greatest gift of self realisation. You must lose something to gain something. When something is going away from you, be happy and ready to welcome the big gift you are about to receive. You have to trust nature and yourself enough that any grief coming your way is handled by your trust. When you are calm and happy – no grief can touch you. It can be anything – even losing a dear one – gives you a gift of becoming wiser. You tend to see what you have lost is not something lost – but you have just let go. Losing is negative whereas “letting go” is positive. Let go, it is wonderful.

Begin to gallop

DSCN0322

“Whoever sees clearly whats diseased in himself, begins to gallop on the way.” ~Rumi

There is an old saying – “You can wake up someone who is asleep, but not someone who is acting asleep”. At some level we are covering ourselves by our own deceit. We want to believe that we are perfect or we want to be seen so. How can “I” make a mistake? It was not “MY” problem, “YOU” should have been more careful. Was it not “YOUR” duty to take care of it? How is it “MY” blame? “YOU” always do this, “I” can’t be bothered. Next time “YOU” do this, “I” can’t take this anymore! – These are familiar terms for many of us. We have used this again and again – unconsciously many times in a day even. There are two things we have to watch out here for – first is that it is always outward looking and second is “YOUR” ego is bigger than the other person. The combination of this makes it lethal. The more we think of ourselves and our ego, we are not looking at our true self. We are looking at our bloated self. The more we see ourselves bloated, the more we are convinced that we know the best. In fact the bloating is because we are totally convinced that we know more. Secondly, when we are outward facing we are not even thinking about a possibility of us being wrong. We are pointing to the other and saying it is not my problem. This is the disease.

Self acceptance is the beginning of a truly magical journey. Rejection only bloats you.

When we have to make progress we are conditioned by the fact that the more we are right and more we are convinced about being right, we make progress. Unfortunately, this only leads to stay where you are. Against the societal norm where acceptance of you the way you are does not give you material promotions – when it comes to your own self, only acceptance makes you start. The minute we are even open to the idea that, “Yes, I could have been wrong”, “I should have been more careful”, “Who am I to judge you”, “Of course you were right” – makes even everyday life a pleasure. The more we do this, we are seen as a “weak” person in today’s world. The perception of being weak will lead you to become stronger inside. Perceptions never matter. Only when you know the disease, you can even think of the cure. This is a disease which is within us. We need to diagnose it by silence.

The minute you accept, the minute you see the real you without a bloat, the minute you see the other person better or as a mentor – you have started on a great journey within yourself. In fact, every moment you accept – you are galloping within your own great journey of self discovery. That journey where no perceptions matter, no blame comes your way, no room for bloating, no room for pointing outward – it is a journey completely inwards. An amazing journey awaits.

Beautiful stillness

DSC_0055

“All your restlessness is out of your desire for stillness” ~ Rumi

How many times have you felt that you are staring into something empty? How many times have you had not even a single thought cross your mind, but still feel nothing different? There are many times, where your mind completely blanks out, you are absorbed in nothingness. It is strange but everyone faces this sometimes. It depends on how frequently you are into that state and out. But the truth is – those moments are precious. When someone near you, alerts you and says “Hey what happened?” you realise there was nothing which happened. It is surprising for the other person and sometimes even you. How can you be without a thought? That is the beauty of being still. You are still because there is nothing to disturb you, no thought crosses your mind and you are absorbed in the beauty of your own soul. That moment is extremely special, memorable and treasure-worthy. Somewhere deep in our hearts we yearn for those moments, but they rarely happen. Can you aspire to be in that state for a very long time? may be forever? is it really possible?

Being calm and centred is the true state of our soul, rest are merely disturbances.

On the other hand, when we have to realise the stillness – we have to be as restless we can be. It is like reaching the extremes to appreciate the other. Why do you feel restless? what makes you hanker? the root cause is dissatisfaction. Even though there could be others involved in making you distressed you might blame them, but the actual fact is that you are not satisfied. You need to first satisfy yourself completely before you reach the stillness. The more you yearn for being still, the less and less you will feel restless. The true nature of you is being calm. When children are quiet – have you wondered what are they thinking? what can the small minds be thinking and making them so quiet, so satisfied. There are moments where you do not realise this – they are often in this state. Children are closer to their soul than we are. When they are quiet, they are still and that is the true nature. How beautiful is to even watch those innocent faces be quiet in stillness. Absolutely calm without any ego, any aspiration, any hatred – just be blank, be still, be satisfied.

Start noticing that your soul wants that stillness, be as restless as you can – knowing well that all this will lead you to that stillness. When you are able to embrace that stillness – yearn for more. You will see that you will become more and more still. Don’t listen to anyone, being thoughtless and blank is beautiful. Remain so. You will become more and more clearer for yourself.
